“During my latest visit to our Chinese manufacturer, I am again left in awe over their zealous dedication to craft and passion for rug making. The level of professionalism is uplifting.”
In the world of luxury interiors, a hand-tufted rug is more than a floor covering. It's a canvas of craftsmanship, a narrative woven with technique, and a meeting point between design and tradition. At Volver Studio, each rug is a culmination of precise processes and passionate artistry. Here's a closer look behind the scenes.

1. Sourcing and Dyeing Wool: Color as a Science and Art
It all begins with the finest materials—wool from New Zealand, bamboo silk, or synthetic yarns—chosen for purity, strength, and dye absorption. In dye laboratories, color creation is both science and art.

2. Spinning Wool: Structuring the Thread
Before tufting, the wool is carded and combed for uniformity, then spun into yarns tailored for both beauty and durability. After spinning, the yarns are conditioned—steamed and set—to ensure dimensional stability during tufting and finishing.

3. Digital Mapping and Hand-Tufting: Craft Guided by Code
Each design is translated into a high-resolution digital map using CAD systems. This map is then plotted directly onto a taut canvas with remarkable accuracy (often within ±0.5 mm). Using a handheld tufting gun, the artisan punches yarn into the backing, guided by plotted lines and color zones for texture precision.

4. Latexing and Backing: Securing the Structure
To anchor the yarns in place, a layer of latex is applied to the back of the canvas. This adhesive sets the structure and prevents future unraveling. After curing, a secondary backing—usually felt or cotton—is added for softness, durability, and a refined finish.

5. Sculpting and Carving: Depth Through Handwork
Once tufted, the rug is sheared and enters the sculpting stage. Artisans use specialized tools for contour carving, relief carving for depth, and gradient carving for soft ombré transitions.

6. Packaging: Luxury in Every Detail
After final inspections, the rug is steam-pressed, hand-rolled, and packaged with care. Protective layers preserve pile and sculpting. Whether heading to Oslo or New York, every rug travels in custom tubes or crates designed to safeguard its craftsmanship.

More Than a Rug
A hand-tufted rug is a product of both innovation and heritage. Every step, from wool selection to digital mapping, tufting, and final packaging, is infused with intention. At Volver Studio, we honor this craft—true luxury lies not just in the surface you see, but in the care, skill, and spirit beneath it.
